Ministers at the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks say they are determined to pave the way for a basic agreement on the most contentious issues.
The ministerial talks began on Thursday in Bali, Indonesia, with the 12 member nations represented. Economic Revitalization Minister Akira Amari is representing Japan.
On the first day of the 4-day meeting, the delegates said they will work to resolve differences on tariff elimination on farm products, patent rules and other issues.
They agreed to lay the groundwork for the leaders of their countries to reach a basic agreement at the summit talks next Tuesday.
