Japan: Undersea drilling reaches a record 3000 meters

Japanese scientists conducting undersea drilling in the Pacific off western Japan have reached a record 3,000 meters beneath the seabed.
The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology has been working with the deep-sea survey vessel Chikyu since November in waters about 75 kilometers off Shingu City. The aim of the survey is to examine layers of the seabed in the area, which seismologists see as the possible hypocenter for a massive earthquake that may strike along the Nankai Trough.
The agency says the vessel will continue the drilling and reach 3,600 meters by January 20th after widening the hole it has already made. The agency aims to reach 5,200 meters as early as next year.
