Afghanistan: Taliban Attack Abdullah's Campaign Motorcade

The Wall Street journal reports,''A leading Afghan presidential candidate escaped a Taliban attack Wednesday when his motorcade came under fire, underscoring the perils of the country's historic political transition.
Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah was returning to Kabul from a rally in the eastern city of Jalalabad when his armed convoy came under "heavy gunfire" in a mountain pass not far from the town of Surob,, campaign spokesman Fazlurrahman Orya said.
The convoy continued on to the Surobi district center, where Mr. Abdullah, who finished second to President Hamid Karzai in the 2009 election, attended a campaign gathering before heading back to Kabul. Mr. Karzai isn't allowed to run again.
Mr. Orya said no one was hurt in the incident, but added: "We have a major problem with the government. It's the government's job to provide security, and the government knew that Abdullah is going through that road. It should have secured the road."
