A Japanese Cabinet minister says Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is likely to make a decision on the consumption tax increase before a summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, in October.
Economic Revitalization Minister Akira Amari made the comment on an NHK TV debate program on Sunday.
Referring to a consumption tax increase scheduled for next April, Amari said it's best to raise the tax as planned but repercussions should be considered. He said the government will think about temporary or other measures to address potential problems.
Amari said the decision will be made in late September or early October.
