China: Newspaper urges privacy-transparency balance in real-estate registration

A Chinese newspaper article has urged efforts to strike a balance between privacy protection and the public's right to know in establishing the country's real-estate registration system.
"There need to be restrictions on requests for information to protect citizens' privacy. However, any approach that sets excessively strict terms and denies supervision attempts should be avoided," said an article published in the Sunday edition of the Beijing Youth Daily under the byline of the newspaper's commentator Pan Hongqi.
An official announced on Saturday that China will set up a bureau for real estate registration to facilitate property management reform.
Authorities will also form an unified real-estate registration platform and improve information management and inquiry services related to real estate, according to the official.
The newspaper article said real estate generally constitutes the bulk of Chinese citizens' private assets while a unified system will enable information to be obtained about one's assets.
While strict regulation governing information requests may well protect citizens' privacy, it should be possible to ease certain restrictions to facilitate authorities' supervision and the public's right to know when it comes to officials' assets that may involve important public interests, the article said.
The unified registration system will also help with the reporting of officials' personal information, it went on.
The Chinese public has been shocked by cases exposed by whistleblowers about owners of multiple properties such as "Sister House" Gong Ai'ai and "Uncle House" Cai Bin.
Last year, Cai, a former senior police officer, was sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison for bribe-taking after an online post claimed that he has more than 20 houses.
Gong was also sentenced to three years in prison for forging IDs and residency records to purchase houses.

China: Travel rush train ticket sales surge

The China Railway Corporation said on Sunday that an average of 7.43 million train tickets have been sold a day since fares went on sale for the upcoming Spring Festival travel rush, with this figure up 20.3 percent year on year.
According to the corporation, 148.58 million tickets for travel in the 40-day travel rush around the Spring Festival had been sold by Saturday, since these tickets became available on December 23.
Passengers can buy train tickets online or by telephone.
China's official ticket-booking website www.12306.cn had sold 3.59 million train tickets per day up to Saturday, with a growth of 57 percent from a year ago.
The Spring Festival, or China's lunar new year, is the country's most important traditional holiday for family reunions. Most people will go home for the festival, putting great pressure on the country's transportation system.
The coming Spring Festival falls on Jan. 31. This year's travel rush, literally translated as "spring transportation," is expected to last from Jan. 16 to Feb. 24.
People can book tickets for trains 25 days before the travel date via the Internet or telephone, while train stations and train ticket agencies begin to sell the tickets 23 days ahead.

What I wish for Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is a time for making wishes. But unlike in the West, the tradition in China seems to have grown increasingly charged with superstition as more Chinese turn to a myriad of deities to grant them better times ahead.
On the first day of the lunar calendar last year, Lama Temple (or Yonghegong) in Beijing drew a crowd of nearly 80,000 who burned joss sticks to seek the blessings of their gods; the figure for the previous Lunar New Year was about 67,000. The turnout could be much higher in a couple of weeks when the nation celebrates Spring Festival.
While explanations abound, I tend to believe feelings of uncertainty or sometimes helplessness, or both, have driven many to deities that are believed to possess magical powers. When I think about my wishes for the nation and myself in the Year of the Horse, I realize some of them look set to happen, but most would require luck and a touch of miracle. Here are my five top hopes.
1: More blue-sky days: In 2013, Beijing saw 58 heavily polluted days with smoggy skies, or almost 16 percent of the year. Urban residents now live in constant fear of smog striking any time again even during lulls of blue skies. While the nation sorely needs to devise a coherent and viable strategy to clear smog, scientists and officials have locked horns over the main causes of the pollution woes.
I pray for a miracle, without which we'll continue to count on strong winds to blow away smog.
2: Safer food: President Xi Jinping's impromptu visit to a Qingfeng Steamed Bun outlet late last month has hugely boosted the reputation of local dishes and renewed people's love affair with traditional dishes. At the restaurant, Xi ordered six pork-stuffed steamed buns, stewed pig liver soup and a plate of vegetables, which have since become one of the most popular set meals in the restaurant chain.
Like many other Chinese consumers who are jittery about frequent food contamination, my family has always tried to avoid cheap, mass-market food. But after Xi ate at Qingfeng, we followed suit and found the eatery clean, and its buns and porridge tasted delicious.
I hope the president's visit marks a new beginning for other local food brands, too.
3: Better working conditions for journalists: Believe it or not, journalism has become one of the most stressful and dangerous jobs in China. Last week, the All-China Journalists Association launched a special fund to compensate journalists who have died or have been injured in the line of duty, with claims ranging from 5,000 yuan ($852.6) to 300,000 yuan.
I wish good luck to colleagues and fellow journalists who risk their health and even lives in the competition to grab headlines and readers' attention.
4: Happier family life with anti-graft campaign: Corruption may have played a significant role in many family break-ups because crooked officials are more likely to be unfaithful to their spouses. Since the end of last year, officials in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, have been asked to answer the question, "Do you desire extra-marital affairs or sex outside marriage?", as a key indicator of corruption.
The ongoing anti-corruption drive has significantly reduced the nightlife and other extra curricular activities of people in power. The latest joke doing the rounds is that the divorce rate could fall as more officials head home after work.
5: Stabilizing housing prices: The continuing frenzied home sales at stratospheric prices surprized both homeowners and property agents last year. In the last five years, home prices have risen by three to four times in Beijing.
While sellers are laughing their way to the bank and buyers are rushing to take the plunge, remember the popular belief that housing prices will only go up is false. Let's pray the market will stabilize soon to avoid a housing bubble, which will have a serious impact on the economy and millions of homeowners when it bursts.

Xiaomi gets another new convert as Steve Wozniak drops into Beijing HQ

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has long since discovered the magic key that helped him escape from Apple’s walled garden. Now he’s free to go anywhere, say anything, and use any device he feels like. Today, Wozniak – aka Woz – dropped into the HQ of Chinese startup phone-maker Xiaomi.
According to former Google and Android VP turned AppleexecutiveHugoBarra, who just posted a photo and some details to his Google+ page Woz is a new convert to their phones. Woz declared that it’s “very emotional for me to be a part of Xiaomi now” – a reference to him using a Xiaomi Mi3 (not working for the ambitious phone-maker).
Barra says that Woz had more advice for those in attendance at Xiaomi’s New Year celebration in Beijing;

Always make sure your products are better than what any other human being could make.
Xiaomi sold 18.7million of its Android-based smartphones in 2013. It operates just in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The firm, founded by serial entrepreneur Lei Jun, will expand to Sigapore next.
Wozniak is staying in Beijing all weekend. He’ll be at the capital’s GeekPark tomorrow, and then he’ll be back at Xiaomi on Sunday for a “dialogue” with Lei Jun in front of invited guests. We’ll be there to hear what the pair have to say.

Riportiamo i cervelli italiani a casa

“La piattaforma è no profit e a stampo professionale.

Lavori stagionali e a tempo determinato, ecco a chi rivolgersi

Agricoltura-cocomeri

Marc Faber thoughts on markets 2014 and interview by moneycontrol.com

"The strength seen in the US market will continue; while it is too late to buy the US markets, says ace investor Marc Faber. At the same time he says that it is too early to commit huge investments to emerging markets yet. “We have a very large valuation discrepancy between the US and the emerging markets. The growth in emerging economies will be slower in the next three-five years than it has been in the past three-five years, so I think that there will be still be some disappointment,” he said in an interview to CNBC-TV18. Farber who is also the editor & publisher of The Gloom, Boom & Doom Report is not gung-ho on the performance of global equities and foresees muted returns from this asset class in the next few years. Those betting on equities won’t fetch more than 5 percent returns going ahead, he added. While global investors have been fretting about the impact on markets if the US Federal Reserve withdraws its monetary stimulus sooner than later, Faber reiterates that even if the Fed decides to taper the bond programme, it would be done very lightly. In fact, he feels that the Fed will keep broadening asset purchases for few more years to support the markets. “When they introduced QE1 in November 2008, my view was this would be a permanent status and that we would up to QE99 and they wouldn’t abandon tapering,” he elaborated. Meanwhile, sharing views on the India he pointed out Indian equities have seen severe wealth destruction in dollar terms from 2008. He advises market participants to shift focus from macro data like GDP growth etc to individual companies. Faber sees opportunity in midcap and small cap stocks in India. He prefers betting his chips on private sector banks currently. just India. Now we have a very large valuation discrepancy between the US and the emerging markets. So what you buy today - Do you continue to buy the US that may still rise or do you gradually move to emerging economies? I think it is too late to buy the US and it is probably too early to make a major commitment into emerging economy stock markets, because the growth in emerging economies will be slower in the next 3-5 years than it has been in the past 3-5 years, so I think that there will be still be some disappointment.
Q: If it is not the developed market equities and it is not the emerging market equities where would you put your money to use at current levels?
A: I think what people hate today is essentially to hold cash and my sense is that the return from equities will be very muted in the next few years. Maybe you will make something like 5-10 percent per annum, but even that would be a very high return considering that in the western world - in eurozone, in America and in Japan you have essentially zero interest rates. So if equity investors make 5 percent per annum, it is actually a very higher return.
Q: We have the non-farm payrolls data coming out from the US today. In your opinion what is the taper timeline that we could be working with and will emerging markets such as India see the same amount of volatility and uncertainty that we just saw a couple of months earlier in the year?
A: When they introduced Quantitative Easing one (QE1) in November 2008, my view was that this would be a permanent status, in other words that we would go up to QE99 and that they would not abandon the asset purchases. Now there has been talk about tapering for the last 6-8 months, but in my view if they taper, it will be a very cosmetic gesture and on any sign of further economic weakness, or if asset markets decline again like the stock market drops 10-20 percent they will actually increase the asset purchases. My sense is that the Federal Reserve will continue to buy assets in order to try to support the asset markets.

Q: Do you think the taper fears are overdone by the markets?
A: The market has already adjusted, because they introduced QE3, QE4 in the summer of 2012. At the time the 10-year Treasury note yield was 1.43 percent. We are now at 2.8 percent on the 10-year. In other words, they have both assets at the end of November over a trillion dollars already this year and yet interest rates have gone up; in other words it seems that the Federal Reserve has lost control of the bond market. They can keep short-term rates indefinitely at essentially very low rate, but there will be of course some economic damages arising from zero interest rate policies.
Q: I know you are not very gung-ho on emerging markets as a whole, but what is your view on India in specific? Would you have a target for the Nifty that you can share with us? The domestic cue that we are working with would be the state assembly elections and the national elections later next year. Would that change your opinion or maybe help your view towards India in specific?
A: We are down in India from the early 2008 high by 40 percent in US dollar terms, in other words adjusted for the currency movements. We are not down 40 percent in rupee terms, but in dollar terms. I think that people pay too much attention to GDP growth figure etc and should rather focus more on individual companies. The problem in American economies is that a lot of money has flowed in and it has boosted the valuation of essentially very liquid stocks or big market cap stocks whereas smaller cap stocks are reasonably priced. So I think there is an opportunity in India, whether the index will go up a lot or not that I do not know, but for the active investor that does not buy the index, I see an opportunity.
Q: This week in itself we have seen the Indian markets outperform the rest of the emerging market on the back of the domestic event, the state election verdict in anticipation of a favourable verdict there. If it actually does materialise is there a possibility that Indian markets might outperform the other emerging markets?
A: I just explained to you that the Indian market is still down 40 percent in dollar terms from the 2008 high; whereas other markets like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines were up until May by about 4 times from the 2009 lows. So we had an underperformance of India compared to other emerging economies until recently. And we have this pool of international liquidity that is driven by asset allocators, so they look at India - they see a relative poor performance and they see some marginal improvement in the macroeconomic environment of India. So money is flowing out of countries like Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand into India.
Q: Do you have any select stocks or sectors that you are taking positions if in case within India?
A: I think banks are very inexpensive.
Q: Within that would it be private or public?
A: Private. "

iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C account for 12% and 2% of the total iOS devices in mainland China as of December 2013, according to the report by Umeng, the Chinese mobile analytics and service provider. iPhone 5S seems more popular among Chinese users as iPhone 5C only gained 6.7% a share four month after the launch.
40% iOS devices had been updated to 7.0.4 version. Jailbreak rate decreased to 12.7% from 14.1% one month ago. Umeng concludes that more users chose to upgrade the operating system by themselves rather than turn to a jailbreak provider.

Former Israeli Leader Ariel Sharon Dies

''Former Israeli leader Ariel Sharon, died Saturday.
Mr. Sharon's career spanned the history of Israel from its establishment in 1948. As a soldier, he commanded troops in every major conflict through the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, when he encircled Egypt's Third Army in the Sinai and was hailed at home as the "King of Israel."
In subsequent years, he was a senior member of the Likud Party and served in numerous cabinet posts. Among them, he was minister of defense during Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, an episode that left him tarred by a government commission that blamed him for failing to prevent the killing of a large number of Palestinian and other civilians in what became known as the Sabra and Shatila massacre.
In 2001, Mr. Sharon staged a political comeback when he became prime minister at a time of escalating terrorist violence. As prime minister, he initiated construction of a controversial barrier along the West Bank to protect Israel from incursions.
Then, in 2004, the longtime hawk rocked Israeli politics when he changed course to favor unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. In 2005, the Knesset approved his disengagement plan to withdraw troops and citizens from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements.
The uproar within Likud following the withdrawal led Mr. Sharon to resign and form a new party, Kadima, that dominated the Knesset for most of the rest of the decade.
Ariel Sharon was born at Kfar Malal, a cooperative Jewish farming settlement in the British Mandate of Palestine, outside Tel Aviv. His parents, originally named Scheinerman, were Zionists who emigrated from Russia at the end of World War I.
He joined the Haganah, the underground military movement, in high school, then enrolled in officer training school. Mr. Sharon was 20 when he commanded an infantry company during the Arab-Israeli War in 1948. During the Battle of Latrun, a strategic hilltop between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, his unit was pinned down under hostile fire from Jordanian forces and sustained heavy losses. Mr. Sharon was seriously wounded.
Mr. Sharon had a reputation as a swashbuckler, sometimes leading men into battle in an armored car stocked with gourmet cheese and sausages. On several occasions, he was accused of exceeding orders and of atrocities, but he was regularly promoted.
After the 1948 war, he battled cross-border raiders in the early 1950s. He led the capture of the strategic Mitla Pass in the 1956 Sinai war with Egypt.
In 1967, months before that year's Arab-Israeli war, he was elevated to the rank of major general, and subsequently won a victory over Egyptian troops in the Battle of Abu-Ageila, helping seal Israel's capture of the Sinai Peninsula.
When Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel in 1973, Mr. Sharon had already left the military, but he returned to the front line as a reserve general and led his troops across the Suez Canal, turning the tide against Egyptian forces and cementing his reputation for military prowess.
Mr. Sharon retired after a cease-fire was negotiated, and turned to politics, winning a seat in the Knesset in 1977. He served as agriculture minister and helped draft plans for scaled-up settlements on the West Bank.
In 1982, after the massacres in Lebanon, Mr. Sharon was forced to resign as defense minister when the Kahan Commission found that Israel's army, stationed around two Palestinian refugee camps, knew Christian militants were slaughtering residents of the refugee camps but did nothing to stop it.
After Israel's government stopped establishing new settlements in the 1990s, he encouraged Jewish settlers to set up improvised hilltop settlement outposts, whose watchtowers and crude lodgings gave them the appearance of military bases.
Mr. Sharon was elected prime minister in 2001.A year after his election, as suicide bombings on buses and at restaurants escalated, Mr. Sharon ordered the army into Palestinian cities in the West Bank. He directed plans for a permanent barrier in the West Bank; that wall is credited by some with helping stop the wave of suicide bombings by Palestinians in Israeli cities. Mr. Arafat was besieged in his compound in Ramallah, in the West Bank, where he remained isolated until illness overtook him, and he died in 2004.
While battling militants, Mr. Sharon also decided it would be necessary for Israel to uproot settlements and pull back from Gaza and the West Bank to make way for a Palestinian state and avoid creating a binational state.
Only months after the historic Gaza pullback was completed and amid a 2006 election, Mr. Sharon suffered a stroke that left him in a permanent coma, ending his career and stoking renewed political turmoil''.
